The following post comes from Anna Rodriguez, PETCO’s Associate Merchandise Manager for Reptile and Wildlife Supplies. When it comes to substrates (the underlying later in a tank) every reptile pet parent has their own preference on what to use for what animals. There are a lot of options available, but in some cases it may be difficult to know the benefits of each substrate and which alternatives are available. Here are some of the features and benefits of the different substrates PETCO offers.

Sand – Some people believe that it causes impaction in reptiles, however sand is generally not the reason reptiles become impacted (for more details see Truth or Myth: Sand Impaction). Sand is one of the most widely used desert substrates, it is easy to clean with a sand sifter and available in a wide variety of colors. Sand is great for many reptiles such as leopard geckos, bearded dragons, sand boas, banded geckos and many other kinds of desert reptiles. Of course if you prefer not to use sand there are other options.

The following post comes from Christie Germans, Senior Merchandise Analyst for PETCO by day and photographer by night/weekend. See more of her work at cgermansphotography.com.
One of the biggest joys of coming to work every day is the fact that associates can bring and keep pets at work. I developed the project “Pets @ Work” with the hopes of capturing the daily life of working at our office.
Employees bring their four-legged pals to meetings, take breaks from their busy day to play, and show off unique creatures. It is a blast taking pictures of scenes like this and I especially enjoy the excitement from the pets themselves (I’ve had to wipe my lens off a few times as dogs get pretty close!).
This is not your typical office space and I for one am glad!

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Monday it was investigating cases of Salmonella infections linked to contact with water frogs, including African dwarf frogs.
At PETCO, the health and wellbeing of our customers and their pets is our top priority. That’s why, in light of the recent Salmonella cases, all of our stores where we sell aquatic life and bettas are being directed to place special signs in the aquatics areas of their store to remind customers how to safely and properly handle all companion animals, particularly amphibians and reptiles.
Additionally, Care Sheets that provide specific information on the safe handling of aquatic life and the proper care for all companion animals, including reptiles and amphibians, are available to Continue reading »
