Reptile Substrates 101

Anna RodriguezThe following post comes from Anna Rodriguez, PETCO’s Associate Merchandise Manager for Reptile and Wildlife Supplies.When it comes to substrates (the underlying later in a tank) every reptile pet parent has their own preference on what to use for what animals.  There are a lot of options available, but in some cases it may be difficult to know the benefits of each substrate and which alternatives are available.  Here are some of the features and benefits of the different substrates PETCO offers.

sand substrateSandSome people believe that it causes impaction in reptiles, however sand is generally not the reason reptiles become impacted (for more details see Truth or Myth: Sand Impaction). Sand is one of the most widely used desert substrates, it is easy to clean with a sand sifter and available in a wide variety of colors. Sand is great for many reptiles such as leopard geckos, bearded dragons, sand boas, banded geckos and many other kinds of desert reptiles. Of course if you prefer not to use sand there are other options.

Safe Handling of Reptiles & Amphibians

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Monday it was investigating cases of Salmonella sammyfrogsfriendinfections linked to contact with water frogs, including African dwarf frogs.
