Marco’s Adoption Story

Every month, we’ll feature a rescue/adoption story from one of our associates here at Petco HQ.    This month, we’d like to share the story of Marco, a handsome Bichon who went from roaming the mean streets of Van Nuys  to strutting his stuff down the pooch lovin’  halls of the Petco offices. At Petco, [...]

Otis Finds a Home…Finally

Returned three times, Otis was about to be euthanized when a miracle happened. This story comes from Petco's online adoption partner, Petfinder.com Otis's days were numbered. He'd been at the shelter for quite some time and, in fact, had been adopted three times and returned each time. [caption id="attachment_6797" align="alignright" width="247" caption="Returned three times, Otis was about to be euthanized when a miracle happened."][/caption] He was good looking and well mannered, so just what was it that caused him to be on the short list for euthanasia? Katy Reicks from Philadelphia believes it was because no one had the patience to deal with his special needs: Otis is deaf. She and her boyfriend had both grown up with dogs, but neither of them had one since they'd been adults. Now the time seemed right, so they began searching Petfinder.com for one to adopt. "I looked through hundreds of listings," Reicks says. "Then I clicked on a link for a pit bull mix named Otis. As soon as I saw his picture, my heart stopped. Iknew that I had found my dog." They contacted PAWS (Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society) and learned that Otis was scheduled to be euthanized the next day. The shelter put him "on hold" until we could meet him three days later," Reicks says. "As soon as we saw him, there was no question that we would take him home. We bonded with him immediately." The couple has has Otis for about four years now. "During that time, he has taught us things we could have never imagined," Reicks says. "We are more patient, kind and compassionate people." Otis, she says, brings them joy, laughter and unconditional love--and that has come as a time when she needed it most. Three years ago she became ill with Crohn's disease and has had 11 major surgeries. "Without Otis' companionship and care, I don't know where I'd be. His love, cuddles and kisses make life worth living." The adoption has been a win-win for both Otis and Reicks. Looking for your forever friend? Have an adoption story? Please share.

Fall Safety Tips for Your Pet

Out for a Walk by Petco Associate Deri Prichard[caption id="attachment_6312" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Out for a Walk by Petco Associate Deri Pritchard"][/caption] After a particularly hot and humid summer, there's nothing more refreshing than when the air turns crisp and the heat is finally OFF! However, the brisk air and colorful fall leaves also bring a variety of health hazards for your pet. Here are some tips to help keep your pet safe:
  • No acorns! Squirrels, mice, birds and deer may all enjoy the bounty of your giant oak tree, but your dog cannot. Acorns are highly toxic for dogs, as is any standing water that contains oak leaves. If you have oak trees on your property, you may want to keep  your pet away from the area while those acorns drop. And always keep an eye on your pup. If you see him or her chewing on acorns, you may want to call your vet--just in case. Acorns can cause more than just a bit of intestinal upset--they can cause kidney failure.
  • No mushrooms, please. Cooler weather encourages the growth of mushrooms and toadstools. Steer your pup clear of these fungi on your walks.
  • Scratch that itch. Fleas and mites are a continued source of skin irritation for your pup. Make sure that you keep him or her properly treated for these annoying pests.
  • Prevent burns. Fireplaces and space heaters earn a warm sport in my heart when there's a chill in the air. However, if your dog or cat trends toward the curious side (and whose don't?) protect their natural instincts with some safety precautions. Keep the fireplace screen closed when there's a fire in the hearth. And never leave space heaters on when you leave a room (that's a good safety precaution for you, too), as many a fire has been sparked by an overturned or forgotten space heater.
  • The garage is a dangerous place. When the weather turns cool, outdoor cats turn to the comfort of the garage. They're also attracted to the smell of antifreeze, and those drips could spell danger for felines or dogs. Fix any car leaks immediately and clean  up the spill.
  • Cold weather is, well, cold. Now is the time to check out your pet's bedding. It might be time for a new bed, some new blankets, or perhaps a new sweater. Pets get arthritis just like people, so watch for signs of trouble--like stiffness or reduced mobility. (By the way, from 11/11 - 11/13, Petco is offering $5 off select dog beds, in case your pup could use a new one!)
  • Say 'no' to table scraps. It's not just us who can add a few pounds over the holidays! The festivities also seem to encourage a few extra "snacks" and treats, which can add up as unwanted pounds for your pooch. Avoid the urge to feed Fido Thanksgiving delicacies, or to over-reward good behavior. Select healthy treats whenever possible. And, you can do both of you a big favor by taking an extra walk or two!
Fall is such a fun season. Make it your pet's too, with just a little extra care. Have any tips you'd like to add? Login and comment! Happy Fall!

A Dog’s Declaration

Written by Meghan Scott (PETCO Foundation Star Supporter) There comes a time in every dog’s life when the rules of everyday life imposed by masters everywhere simply becomes to much. It is at this time that dogs must band together to help our humans see the light and impose changes for a better life. From this day forward these wrongs among others will no longer be tolerated. It is time that our barks no longer be ignored and silenced. Instead they should be heard and understood to create stepping-stones to a new world. We realize that there may be a few misunderstandings due to our actions and we will take responsibility for clearing those up. Muddy paws are not meant to be a mess or inconvenience. They are simply our version of artwork for you placed on the floor instead of paper. When we chew up your shoes or clothes it is not done out of spite or pure bad behavior. It is our way of nicely telling you what no one else will – they are ugly and you need new ones. If we snatch food off of your plate while no one is looking it is not because we are underfed or looking for attention. Its because we know how hard you have been trying to stick to your diet and wouldn’t want you to slip up so we are helping with portion control. If you come home to find the garbage scattered all over the floor, we didn’t do it to enrage you. We just  wanted you to take a closer look at what you threw away and make sure there is nothing important that ended up in there as an accident. We, as dogs, never judge or look down upon our masters when their behavior is less than perfect. So why is it that when we slip up on occasion we are punished and made to stay outside all alone? Dogs would love nothing more than to take you everywhere we go. So why would you want to leave us while you go to work, or shopping, or on vacation? For too long we have sat and patiently waited for you to walk back through the door only to be ignored when that time finally comes. How many times have we been tied up, put in a crate, or left outside in the summer sun, pouring rain or bitter cold? How long must we suffer from ear tugging, hair pulling and tail grabbing from babies and small children? When will boarding conditions become more than a small outdoor chainlink kennel with a hard concrete floor? When will our food become more than the same pile of bland crunchy bits made with imitation flavors? How long will our birthdays go unacknowledged and uncelebrated? How many episodes of Gossip Girl must we sit through before we are given a chance to control the remote for once? When will we finally be allowed to eat in same room as you instead of having to eat alone in the laundry room? How long must we go into hiding simply because company is coming over?
We dream of a world where all dogs are created equal and are not treated differently whether they are purebred, mutts, strays, rescues, big, small, old, young, skinny, chunky, free, expensive, clean, dirty, stinky, fresh, spotted or solid. A world where we no longer have to sit on the couch in secret while you are away, but where we can sit together morning, noon or night. A world where we are no longer forced to compete with the vile cat for your attention and affection, but can live in a cat free environment. A world where treats are not only to be dispersed after a bathroom break, but are also be used as a reward for our loyalty, affection, and companionship. A world where playtime is not restricted to a small window of time each day but is so extensive that we are the ones that need a break not you. A world where we are not cast aside or abandoned because we are no longer that cute little puppy that you brought home, but will forever be loved and cherished as a member of the family no matter our appearance or size. A world where adoption is no longer needed because cruelty and torture are things of the past. A world where the phrase “man’s best friend” is more than a series of three words – it’s meaning is visible and unquestionable.
