Fall Safety Tips for Your Pet

Out for a Walk by Petco Associate Deri Prichard

Out for a Walk by Petco Associate Deri Pritchard

After a particularly hot and humid summer, there’s nothing more refreshing than when the air turns crisp and the heat is finally OFF! However, the brisk air and colorful fall leaves also bring a variety of health hazards for your pet. Here are some tips to help keep your pet safe:

  • No acorns! Squirrels, mice, birds and deer may all enjoy the bounty of your giant oak tree, but your dog cannot. Acorns are highly toxic for dogs, as is any standing water that contains oak leaves. If you have oak trees on your property, you may want to keep  your pet away from the area while those acorns drop. And always keep an eye on your pup. If you see him or her chewing on acorns, you may want to call your vet–just in case. Acorns can cause Continue reading »

Feral Cats on the Big Island of Hawaii

Sometimes it’s easy to look at a topic like Spay and Neuter and think that if you have taken care of your own animals then you have done your part.  And yes, you have done the responsible thing for your own pets (for their health, behavior and the potential of bringing unwanted pets into the world) and you have provided an example for others to follow.  For that we thank you and hope you feel you’ve made the right decision. As we wind down our annual National Spay/Neuter Drive we also want to thank you for donations you’ve made in store and online which support numerous spay/neuter initiatives for those less fortunate than yourself.

As pet parents, we have the right and obligation to make those sorts of decisions for our pets.  What you may not be aware of is the enormous number of animals that seem to be companion animals but who are no one’s responsibility.  I am referring to the feral cat colonies that can be found in almost any big city and many small ones. They live in alley ways, condemned and abandoned buildings and parks.  Because they look like domestic cats, most assume that Continue reading »

Pets @ Work Photo Project

The following post comes from Christie Germans, Senior Merchandise Analyst for PETCO by day and photographer by night/weekend. See more of her work at cgermansphotography.com.

One of the biggest joys of coming to work every day is the fact that associates can bring and keep pets at work. I developed the project “Pets @ Work” with the hopes of capturing the daily life of working at our office.

Employees bring their four-legged pals to meetings, take breaks from their busy day to play, and show off unique creatures. It is a blast taking pictures of scenes like this and I especially enjoy the excitement from the pets themselves (I’ve had to wipe my lens off a few times as dogs get pretty close!).

This is not your typical office space and I for one am glad!
