Late last month, authorities in Shelton, Conn. raided a local house and arrested 19 individuals on charges of animal cruelty and illegal gambling.  Approximately 150 birds – canaries and saffron finches – were also seized by authorities, who said the birds had been put in betting matches in which they fought to the death.
