Animal Books

I received the great email below from a PETCO associate about her favorite animal books. I still vividly remember my 5th grade teacher reading Where the Red Fern Grows out loud to the class over the period of a few weeks. She was crying so badly in the end that she had to pass the book off to a student. That student made it through one page before she had to hand it off. We went through four readers before we made it to the end. What a great book. What are your favorite animal books?

Letter from Kim, a PETCO Associate

I’ve been happily employed at PETCO since December 2008. I’ve learned so much about caring for animals and I’m so proud to represent PETCO because I believe this company is genuinely committed to the health and welfare of pets. Since one of my hobbies is reading, I’ve looked for books with animals as the theme in the hope that as I pursue my hobby, I can also educate myself. That said, I’d like to share with other pet enthusiasts these books that I’ve read and loved so maybe others can share in the knowledge and empathy I’ve gained:  Continue reading »

Animals in Movies

With the DVD release of Disney’s Bolt as well as the recent cinema release of Disney’s G-Force, I started thinking about my favorite movies involving animals, animated or live-action. I also started thinking about how many creative liberties Hollywood takes with depicting an animal in a movie. Whether it’s a fuzzy four legged creature, or a six legged “monster” we’ve all seen different takes of animals in movies. The following (in no particular order) are my favorite family movies with animals as the stars, virtual or… non-virtual (is that the right term?). Anyway, on with the show… or blog… whatever…

Not Your Typical Gourmet Chef

Not your typical gourmet chef

Take Pixar’s Ratatouille. You have to understand, I had very low expectations for this film. I’m not a rat person. I don’t hate them like some people do, nor am I terrified of them, but I didn’t think this would sit well with the general public.  Boy was I wrong! You know how people are scared of rats, or think they’re gross? Either way, I’m glad this turned out to be a great movie. Their personalities were really Continue reading »

Can I borrow your dog?

This may seem like an unusual question for someone who doesn’t work in a pet-friendly office, but I hear it on a regular basis.  One of the perks of working at the PETCO office is we get to bring our pets to work with us.  I usually bring my dog Ace 2-3 days per [...]

Birthdays

birthday

I don't know what's happening but I love the attention.

So today is my birthday. It’s one of those big ones that ends in zero.

No presents please.

It got me thinking about pet’s birthdays. Do you celebrate your pet’s birthday? Do you sing to them? Do you think they understand it is a special day?

What about the “big” birthdays, like the one I am experiencing today? Does that call for an even bigger pet celebration? I did the math and Sammy Snake’s 10 year birthday passed in 2006 and I did nothing to mark the occasion. I could have given him/her some fresh substrate and an extra mouse.

At least I don’t Continue reading »

Of Thumbs and Stars

Eagle-eyed readers may have noticed that I dropped the one through five star rating from this blog and am just sticking with the thumbs up/thumbs down ratings. When Thoreau advised us to “simplify, simplify” I don’t think he was referring to blogs, but it is still good advice.

So if you like an article [...]

The Pet Work vs. Fun Proportionality Law

I have a theory. However the word law sounds so much cooler than theory so I’m going to call it a law.

It’s an idea I’ve been developing over the last 7 years here at PETCO. It’s based purely on my observations and has no basis in science. It is called the Pet Work vs. Fun Proportionality Law. The basic explanation of this law is that as the amount of fun a pet is increases, the amount of work that pet takes to care for increases proportionally. I’ve graphed it below.

Pet Work vs. Fun Proportionality Law

Let’s take dogs for example. Continue reading »

My Top 5 Favorite Breeds

I’m a dog lover through and through, and people often ask me what dogs I like best.  Though it can be difficult to pick a breed (especially since most dogs I know are mixes anyway), the following list is comprised of dogs I truly love. Also, I’d like to preface this list by saying I’m biased towards large breed dogs, but I do know there are many smaller breeds that are fantastic as well.

#5) Beagle

I’m quite fond of these little dogs. I myself have a Beagle named Jade. She’s friendly, cute, strong, cuddly, funny, and the most mischievous dog I’ve ever known. Beagles are known for their loving dispositions and are excellent family dogs. They stay a relatively small size, yet are plenty sturdy for long walks, romps at the dog park, or a wrestling match at home. They do need consistent training, and can suddenly “lose” their ability to hear you if they catch an interesting scent. Sometimes Jade has her nose to the ground so much I refer to it as her fifth leg!

Life Underwater

Don Spaeth is PETCO’s Aquatic Magnent Store Manager.

Serene, tranquil, relaxed… these are all words that come to mind when I think of life under water.

As a 15-year family member of PETCO it is easy to fall in love with and want to bring home every animal under the sun, but my real passion is for aquatic life. I have been infatuated with aquatic life as long as I can remember, taking hours to walk through the aquatic exhibit at the zoo as a kid - which I see many kids do daily when they look at the aquariums at PETCO stores. I am currently the proud parent of Continue reading »

My Fish Tanks

75g Freshwater
75g Freshwater

People around the office often refer to me as a “fish geek”.  I take this as a compliment.  When there’s a sick fish, or someone has a tank issue, I usually get a phone call.  I’m also asked why I don’t have a tank in my cube, and usually I say it’s because I already have enough pets and 2 tanks at home.

As much as I’d like to invite everyone over to look at my fish, I don’t think my little house has the capacity.  So I thought I’d show everyone a few pics of my tanks.
