Jalyn’s Special Gift

Jalyn is a special little girl with a very big heart when it comes to helping animals.

Jalyn is a special little girl with a very big heart when it comes to helping animals.

Seven-year-old Jalyn had a special idea in store for her birthday: to help pets. So when she arrived at the Romeoville, Illinois, Petco, with a cart full of goodies to donate to the Romeoville Humane Society, [...]

Rescue and Petco Save Guinea Pigs from Hoarder

While many guinea pigs have been adopted, many more await their forever homes.

How far would you go to save hundreds of small animals? I was recently at Petco corporate headquarters and heard this amazing story that involved many Petco associates who worked together to help in the rehoming process.

The story begins with 150 guinea pigs being surrendered at a Los-Angeles area animal shelter by an apparent hoarder. The shelter sent out an SOS and several rescure groups jumped to help. But the bigger question was where to foster 150 guineas? Continue reading »

The Petco Zoo – It’s Official

Admit it. Entertaining kids is hard work.

Fish at the Petco Zoo

My four year old is a wriggling ball of energy and imagination and I get worn out much faster than she does, both mentally and physically. There are only so many games of dress-up and pretend I can handle.

Yesterday she spent a solid hour in the backyard kiddy pool pretending she was a turtle at the zoo. She wanted me to comment on how beautiful the pink turtle was and pat it on the head.

While heading to the real zoo is an option it’s not always practical. Thankfully our local Petco works great in a pinch. It’s free entertainment and my Continue reading »

A Dog’s Declaration

Written by Meghan Scott (PETCO Foundation Star Supporter)

There comes a time in every dog’s life when the rules of everyday life imposed by masters everywhere simply becomes to much. It is at this time that dogs must band together to help our humans see the light and impose changes for a better life.

From this day forward these wrongs among others will no longer be tolerated. It is time that our barks no longer be ignored and silenced. Instead they should be heard and understood to create stepping-stones to a new world.

We realize that there may be a few misunderstandings due to our actions and we will take responsibility for clearing those up. Muddy paws are not meant to be a mess or inconvenience. They are simply our version of artwork for you placed on the floor instead of paper. When we chew up your shoes or clothes it is not Continue reading »

15 Reasons that Search Dogs Rock

This past week I was invited to attend a special demonstration by the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation. I have to say, these dogs are incredible. There are so many things I didn’t know about how these dogs are acquired, trained and maintain their focus. The demonstration showed how solid the dogs are in their basic training, how they teach them to find a hidden person, how they work with them to teach them how to master more difficult terrain and the absolute joy these dogs seem to have when they’re “working”.

I hope you enjoy some of the many photos I took and the 15 things that I learned:

  1. National Search Dog Foundation dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues nationwide. Often the dogs that are chosen are ones that have been turned in because they keep escaping from their yards. It shows they already are using their brain for how to get around barriers – important for a dog searching through rubble. One such dog was Huck who, even after he got into their program continued to amaze them. Once he got into training, the trainers started to think they were going crazy because he would end up in kennels other than the ones that they placed him in. They soon learned that Huck could open gates, undo latches and climb fences. He wouldn’t necessarily go anywhere, just head out to visit other dogs in other kennels and often even put himself back in his own kennel when he was done.
  2. It takes a year of Continue reading »

PETCO Pets: Express Yourselves!

Wizard of Oz Pet CostumesI have always loved Halloween. It is the one time of year you can be anything you want, wear whatever you want and no one thinks you have completely lost your mind. Every year when I was growing up, my costume choice was calculated and well planned out. It was a reflection of my personality, style and what excited me most.

In thinking about what I pick as my Halloween costume I now have a 4-legged friend, my dog Sarge, to think about as well, which adds a whole other Continue reading »

The Importance of a Microchip

Dana and a cat looking for a new home

Dana, one of our associates at the Christiana, Del., PETCO, was leaving work one night when she heard a cat crying. On the side of the building she found a tiger cat, with white feet and a white stomach. With a little coaxing, she was able to [...]

S is for Snake Head Turtle

The other night I was playing Scattergories with friends (I know, that game is awesome) and we were on the letter “S”, with the category ”amphibian or reptile”. I, having limited knowledge in that department, wrote down “snake”, as did three other people playing.

However, one person shared triumphantly, “Snake Head Turtle.”

“You made that up!” [...]
