 We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Reed Howlett, the CEO of Nature’s Variety, the manufacturer of Instinct and Prairie holistic pet diets, to learn more about the inspiration behind Nature’s Variety and what pets–and pet parents–love about their products:
PETCO: If you could only tell consumers one thing about your brands, what would it be?
HOWLETT: “The one thing that I would tell them is that our brands are raw-inspired. As the leaders in the raw frozen category nationally, we believe pets are at their best when they are eating raw or our raw-inspired foods. Raw pet food is high in the animal protein that pets need and is minimally processed so the naturally occurring vitamins and minerals have not been cooked off.  Happy to be on my commute home, I was cruising down the freeway with the radio jammin’ when the car in front of me, realizing traffic had come to a complete stop, suddenly locks up his brakes in a cloud of tire smoke forcing me to do the same. Held in tightly by my seatbelt with the brakes fully applied my car came to a dramatic stop just a few feet from his bumper. My immediate reaction was to check and make sure my dog Cyber, who was buckled in the back seat, was ok. Cyber was fine and barely fazed but it could have been far, far worse.

 Last summer I ventured into the wild world of backyard chicken raising.
One of my cube neighbors here at the PETCO National Support Center, Jerry, mentioned that we had recently added a domestic fowl (i.e. chickens) shop to petco.com since “backyard chickens” (as they’re popularly referred to) were starting to become very popular both as pets and as a source of fresh eggs.

Do’s
- Purchase the outfit well in advance and allow your pet to try it out at home on several occasions.
- Dress your pet right before an event. If participating in a costume parade or contest, dress your pet just before the line-up, as some costumes can be warm. “Take plenty of water along for your pet to lap up,” says Robins. - “The summer blockbuster movies are always a great source of inspiration for costumes,” says Robins. “No doubt that this year we will see a lot of Persian canine princes, Ironman doggies and Twilight vampires.” Other perennial favorites include ladybugs, jack-o-lanterns and devils.
