As I stand on the sidewalk, watching men and women dressed in Hazmat suits move hastily in and out of what looks like a well kept bungalow-style house, the unmistakable odor of garbage and animal feces permeates the air.
Garbage bag after garbage bag of waste is being carried to an awaiting dumpster. “You have to move to across the street, people!” the man in the white suit and helmet says. “It’s not safe to be breathing in this stuff.” The group of bystanders moves quickly to the other side of the street. “How could anyone live like that?” one says. Everyone nods in agreement. Three days earlier, on July 24 , the Dearborn Animal Control officers aided by the Dearborn Animal Shelter and following up on a tip, raided a home in Dearborn, Mich.
