Cats. They’re affectionate, aloof, hilarious, cantankerous, needy, adorable and, often, sleepy all at the same time. As cat owners ourselves, we are continuously in awe of our pets daily.
It was our fascination with–and devotion to–cats that inspired Purina PURR, our new e-magazine that is dedicated exclusively to all things cat: what makes them [...]
Ripley Before and After – photos courtesy of Ripley’s Believe it or Not
His story was meant to be a tragic one. He was discovered in a Louisiana ditch, abandoned, so badly matted that he was unable to walk. Local rescue group, My Heart’s Desire, took him in, nicknaming him Ripley because “believe it or not, there is a dog in there.” Ripley had to be sedated to be groomed; veterinarians found cockroaches — both dead and alive — snared in the 2.5 pounds of fur they cut off.
But word of Ripley’s journey traveled fast. More than 50 applicants came forward, hoping to provide Ripley a better tomorrow. Within a few days, the VP of Communications for Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Tim O’Brien, contacted the shelter to get involved. They offered to pay for his medical care, provided a gift card for food and supplies, and made a donation to the shelter. Finally new owners were chosen, and that’s when PETCO got involved. My black lab Cyber loves being outdoors almost more than she loves food. She’s often at my side as we walk to the grocery store, the hardware store, the dog park, and sometimes just for fun! When going in a store, I “park” her outside, and when I return I’m always pleased to see the new friends she’s made. Sure, I could drive, but instead I get to share an adventure with my four-legged best friend while reducing my negative impact on the environment. I also try to lessen my impact on our environment with Cyber by feeding her natural dog food and treats for the best nutrition possible, using compostable waste bags, and buying eco-friendly dog toys. Ensuring Cyber has a healthy and clean environment to live in is my responsibility as a pet parent, and I know others want the very best for their pets as well.

In support of all the green pet parents out there, I’m proud to announce the Greenwala Pet Channel, in partnership with PETCO and our natural food partners! Greenwala, established a few short years ago, is a rapidly growing online community of Continue reading »
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I get to do some pretty cool stuff working for PETCO. And this weekend was a perfect example. I had the privilege of attending BlogPaws – the first ever pet bloggers’ conference in Columbus, Ohio.
 @CosmoHavanese, a dog who tweets!
Not only did I get to meet a bunch of pets who blog, tweet and socialize on Facebook (yes, you read that right), but I left with an overwhelming feeling of pride in our company, the online pet community and an excitement for the future of social media – both for PETCO and for the animals we all love.
Our Director of Social Media & Commerce, Natalie Malaszenko, was invited to Continue reading »
I’m one of those people who watches that TV show “CSI” only whenever I happen to have my TV on and not much is on… What does this have to do with a cat? See if I’m just rambling or not below: [...]

“I love the snow!!! I love to eat it and do everything I can in it!!! Who needs LA… not me!”
“Sleeping on my bed in the living room… snoring loudly! This is the life.”
“I am getting ready to go to the store. I am going to get a sweater or jacket today. This place is so cold outside I shiver, and I don’t even stay out too long!”
“taking my third nap of the day.”
“So I am only down to bones for things to chew. I have destroyed my kong toys and everything else. Does anyone know of another toy for me to play with that I won’t potentially eat?”
“Just ate my bed in my crate… it’s a new move.”
These are some of the recent posts on Nico’s Facebook page – Nico’s own Facebook page. Yes, that Nico – the deaf Dogo Argentino whose life was saved because people cared enough to post his sad photo on their Facebook pages and network him out of a cold jail cell in Los Angeles County only 6 months ago. That initial Facebook outreach began Nico’s Journey to Rescue. This journey Continue reading »
… who is the top dog of them all?
I love when the American Kennel Club releases the official list of the most popular dog breeds in the country – and the 2009 list, just released yesterday, gives me a personal reason to smile.
German Shepherds are the second most popular dogs in the U.S.
While the faithful Lab Retriever is still holding tight to the number one spot (no surprise there; they’re definitely one of my favs, too), my personal favorite breed of all is finally giving the reigning pooch a run for its money. Coming in just behind Continue reading »
Hugh Jackman at PETCO Christmas Eve
I recently heard about PETCO getting a visit from Hugh Jackman when he came to our Union Square store in New York City. The entire store team had a great time helping him and his wife pick out new pets and supplies for their kids for Christmas. The team [...]

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Monday it was investigating cases of Salmonella infections linked to contact with water frogs, including African dwarf frogs.
At PETCO, the health and wellbeing of our customers and their pets is our top priority. That’s why, in light of the recent Salmonella cases, all of our stores where we sell aquatic life and bettas are being directed to place special signs in the aquatics areas of their store to remind customers how to safely and properly handle all companion animals, particularly amphibians and reptiles.
Additionally, Care Sheets that provide specific information on the safe handling of aquatic life and the proper care for all companion animals, including reptiles and amphibians, are available to Continue reading »
