Randy Grim feeding a stray on the St. Louis Streets

Jimmy Van Patten, of Natural Balance speaks, as Charlie Piscitello, SVP, Chief People Officer at PETCO listens
Last Saturday, a group of us from PETCO, the PETCO Foundation and Natural Balance Pet Foods attended the 3rd Annual Guide Dogs Heroes Brunch in Palm Springs, CA. The annual Heroes Brunch is hosted by Guide Dogs of the Desert to acknowledge the work of its volunteers, puppy raisers, supporters and donors from the past year. The mission of the Guide Dogs of the Desert is to “improve the lives of the blind by creating opportunities for life-changing independence, and by conducting community outreach and education programs.” I’ve had the privilege of being involved with this group for several years now and find it so inspiring. This year they chose to honor PETCO, the PETCO Foundation and Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance Pet food, for our joint partnership in support of Guide Dog schools across the country. As part of National Guide Dog Month last May, PETCO and Natural Balance raised over $600,000 Continue reading »

 a stray in Santorini
I recently had the opportunity to travel to Greece and it was an incredible experience. Athens was so unique; an eclectic mix of sleek modern architecture combined with fascinating ancient Roman ruins. Jim with Tore and Sparky
As PETCO’s CEO, I’m delighted to welcome you to our new blog, The PETCO Scoop.
As you might guess, I love animals – especially my dogs Tore and Sparky – and I know how passionate our customers and associates are about the pets in their lives, too. That’s a big reason why we created this blog. We want it to be a forum for all of us to share great stories of how companion animals improve our lives, and how we can do the same for them. We’ve also recently launched pages on Facebook and Twitter, so visit us there, too.
For my first post, I wanted to share a few things about our company. Continue reading »
PETCO Works with CDC in Providing Safe Handling Info
News media across the country filed stories Monday about a report from the American Academy of Pediatrics stating that “nontraditional pets pose a health risk to young children and people with immune deficiencies, and ownership and exposure should be discouraged in these populations.” The academy’s news release called on pediatricians and veterinarians to raise awareness of health risks and precautions to prevent injury and illness related to companion animals.
The story made a big splash among newspapers, on TV and on Yahoo and Google news pages – but its old news to PETCO and government health officials. In fact, PETCO’s in-store signs and companion animal care sheets already carry language explaining safe-handling responsibilities to prospective pet parents. Continue reading »
