The following post comes from pet lifestyle expert & TV personality Dara Foster.

I have a passion for pets. They have become more and more integrated into our daily lives and it is no longer considered just a novelty to make sure they are pampered.

Making Thanksgiving a positive experience for your furry family member requires a few tips for a smooth day.

Dara’s Holiday Tips

Merrick Thanksgiving Day Dinner Canned Dog Food1. Never Serve Table Scraps

Some human food can be hazardous to your pet’s health causing mild digestive problems or even death. During Thanksgiving, make your pet part of the celebration by serving up a safe, healthy and nutritionally balanced dinner made from human-grade, 5-star ingredients by Merrick. Merrick also offers Grammy’s Pot Pie, Turducken and Thanksgiving Dinner Variety with US sourced ingredients for even the pickiest eaters.

Kong Stuff-A-Ball Toy2. Bad To The Bone: The Danger Of Serving Bones

Never give your cat or dog bones from fish, poultry or other meat sources. Bones can easily cause an obstruction of the airways and splinter off, creating a laceration in the digestive system. Instead, give them a Kong toy stuffed with a Kong Stuff’n Snack and keep them entertained while you prepare the feast.

PETCO Sage Plaid Cat Bed3.  Creating A Quiet Space

Sometimes parties and visitors can stress out your furry friend out causing anxiety and nervousness. Always prepare a quiet retreat for your pet in a bedroom or other area where they can get away and feel calm and relaxed. Provide a familiar bed, crate, blanket, water and toys to help ease their stress.  A great product to use is PETCO’s Cuddler pet bed so your cat or dog can have a quite, comfortable retreat.

Hyper Products Bark N Bat Dog Toy4. Burn Off Some Steam

Before guests arrive, it is a good idea to take your dog for a long walk or a romp outside to burn off some steam. The Bark N Bat by Hyper Products is a great hands free tool to guarantee long runs for your pooch.  A well exercised dog will make for a calmer canine in the house when the excitement of the holiday’s kick in.

People, stop letting the pet food industry brainwash you into thinking that people food is bad for pets. It’s just not true. SOME foods are bad–grapes, raisins, onions, baking chocolate–the list is very easy to find at your vet’s, or online. But even bones aren’t necessarily bad. Do your research. Your pet’s health is in your hands, and most of the same foods that are very nutritious and healthy for humans are also very beneficial to pets–brown rice, quinoa, oatmeal, many vegetables. Don’t believe everything you read.

Last year I made some boiled chicken for my cats, and a small side of mashed potatoes. They loved it. You just have to do your research like Ingrid says. There are many dangerous foods for both cats and dogs. However, I have several friends who feed their pets raw and homemade food and they are very healthy.

well I think the article was specifically warning against giving your pet table scraps.

For advanced pet care folks the BARF diet is a great way to fulfill your pet’s nutritional needs.

BUT for your average pet person who doesn’t have the time to manage their pet’s diet so closely – it is a good “rule of thumb” not to give them table scraps.
