A Tribute to the “Spirit” of Shelter Dogs

Spirit

SpiritI got a call last week, asking if I wanted a chance to say good bye.  Spirit’s health was failing and his mom had tearfully decided that is was his “time”.

I thought back to the day I’d first said hello to this timid creature. On that day, someone else had decided it was his “time”.  A large black dog, he refused to eat or come out of the back of his kennel. He didn’t growl or menace. He simply trembled and pushed himself hard into the kennel walls. I had come to the shelter that day, having signed up with a local rescue group to meet my first foster, a young shepherd mix with an energy level I thought would match that of my 2 year old golden. On my way to the shelter, they had called to say that there was a potential adoptive family coming to meet the shepherd and they might not need me. Almost 45 minutes into the hour trek to the shelter, I decided to go anyway, just in case it didn’t work out.

It was while I was waiting that I met Spirit. Well actually, at first, I only met two brown terrified eyes which simply pulled me in by my soul. With time to waste, I sat down sideways next to the kennel gate. “Don’t try too hard”, I told myself, “it will scare him more”. I traced Continue reading »

Reptile Substrates 101

Anna RodriguezThe following post comes from Anna Rodriguez, PETCO’s Associate Merchandise Manager for Reptile and Wildlife Supplies. When it comes to substrates (the underlying later in a tank) every reptile pet parent has their own preference on what to use for what animals.  There are a lot of options available, but in some cases it may be difficult to know the benefits of each substrate and which alternatives are available.  Here are some of the features and benefits of the different substrates PETCO offers.

sand substrateSandSome people believe that it causes impaction in reptiles, however sand is generally not the reason reptiles become impacted (for more details see Truth or Myth: Sand Impaction). Sand is one of the most widely used desert substrates, it is easy to clean with a sand sifter and available in a wide variety of colors. Sand is great for many reptiles such as leopard geckos, bearded dragons, sand boas, banded geckos and many other kinds of desert reptiles. Of course if you prefer not to use sand there are other options.

The Faces That Are Helped

KlondikeGeorge and Elaine (names changed) adopted Klondike from a local shelter 5 years ago. They are regulars at a dog park I frequent with my dogs. Klondike is a bouncy happy wolfy type dog that runs up to greet all newcomers to the park with equal enthusiasm. Even while play bowing you can see his eyes dance back and forth between his pet parents and the dog he’s trying to entice. While he seems to really enjoy a good game of tag and chase, he seems equally thrilled to roll over on his back and let the little dogs jump all over him. You can see the huge lolling happy grin spread across his face when he hears the little fierce growls as they tug on his collar. Panting and happy, he always bounds  joyously back to George and Elaine when they call him to leave. I see him at least 3-4 days a week at the park. His coat is always immaculate and you can tell he’s well loved and a true member of the family.

Just last week I was at the Continue reading »

Announcing the Greenwala Pet Channel

My black lab Cyber loves being outdoors almost more than she loves food.  She’s often at my side as we walk to the grocery store, the hardware store, the dog park, and sometimes just for fun!  When going in a store, I “park” her outside, and when I return I’m always pleased to see the new friends she’s made.  Sure, I could drive, but instead I get to share an adventure with my four-legged best friend while reducing my negative impact on the environment.  I also try to lessen my impact on our environment with Cyber by feeding her natural dog food and treats for the best nutrition possible, using compostable waste bags, and buying eco-friendly dog toys.  Ensuring Cyber has a healthy and clean environment to live in is my responsibility as a pet parent, and I know others want the very best for their pets as well.

In support of all the green pet parents out there, I’m proud to announce the Greenwala Pet Channel, in partnership with PETCO and our natural food partners!  Greenwala, established a few short years ago, is a rapidly growing online community of Continue reading »

Green Tree Python – An Old Interest Makes a New Addition

After 15 or so years of wanting and admiring them, I finally became a green tree python parent. I happened to hear about a reptile show coming to Anaheim and as someone that already has 2 Bearded Dragons and being a previous owner of 2 14’ Burmese Pythons, I really wanted to attend. While checking out the website of the show, I noticed quite a few Green Tree Python breeders were going to be in attendance and since I’ve always wanted one, I started looking into their care. Long story short, I did leave the show with a Biak (a small island northwest of New Guinea, from which this particular snakes family line comes from) neonate Chondro Python (or Green Tree Python) along with a very highly recommended book, The More Complete Chondro by Greg Maxwell. After a quick stop to my local PETCO, I had a nice home for our new addition (an Exo-Terra 12x12x12 terrarium), along with all the accessories I needed.
