45 things we LOVE about PETCO!

In honor of PETCO’s 45th anniversary this month, we put together a list of 45 things we love about working at PETCO… and about PETCO in general. I have to say, I love working here and I feel pretty darn lucky to be part of such a great company, doing positive work for animals with so many fellow PETCO associates and PETCO shoppers across the country.

PETCO - Celebrating 45 Years

Happy birthday PETCO! In no particular order, let us count ways we love you…

  1. Being surrounded by pets! From the companion animals in our stores, to our adoption partners’ adoptables, to our customers’ furry family members and our own pets at our corporate office in San Diego, we love that coming to work means being around animals all the time.
  2. 22,000 passionate, pet-loving associates.
  3. Treat and rawhide bars… they’re like snack bars for our pets!
  4. Think Adoption First. We work with the PETCO Foundation to find forever homes for more than 200,000 adoptable animals each year. Talk about being able to feel good about going to work.
  5. Aquatics is where it’s at.
  6. Convenient grooming salons with fun scents of the month and FREE charms with a Spa Works package!
  7. PETCO’s associate idea sharing program. We love that PETCO leaders want to know our ideas about our business and how we can improve together.
  8. Helping more than 6,500 Continue reading »

Critter College - Free Lesson Kit for Teachers

If you have kids, I bet you have heard something like this before…

“Mommy, can I get a guinea pig for hotel next week?”

“It’s called show and tell honey, not hotel.”

“Oh yeah, show and tell, so can I have a guinea pig for it?” my daughter begs me in the car, her eyes open wide and a face full of hope.

“Just where did you hear about guinea pigs?  Was Suzy talking about one?  I keep telling you that you don’t need everything Suzy has.”

“No mom, I want to be the first kid to have one!  Mrs. Lamont has adopted one for our classroom.  We named her Snuggles and I am learning some really cool stuff!  For instance, did you know that G-Pigs squeak and hop up and down when they are excited?  It is called popcorning, isn’t that cool?”

“G-pigs?  Is that what you kids are calling them these days? Oh dear.  Well before we make this decision, what else have you learned by having a pet in your classroom?”

“All sorts of stuff!  Guinea pigs are smart enough to know how to walk as soon as they are born!  I know what they eat, how to take care of their habitat, and when they are most active.  I also got the chance to name CareFRESH’s own pig and if I win, I get a scholarship!  Oh and guinea pigs can live up to 10 years!  If I get one now, then I can keep it until I’m old like you and daddy!  Mrs. Lamont also says there are valuable PETCO coupons in the kit that I get to bring home next week, in case I too can become a pet parent!  My teacher also said she likes the program because it covers particular education standards for science, math and language arts.  The program seems to make Mrs. Lamont really happy since the entire lesson plans are already written out for her.”

My daughter proceeds to detail out her pets in the classroom program, while I begin to realize that there is no way we will make it home before stopping at PETCO on the way home.  “Pleeeaaaassseeee mom, can I get a guinea pig?  I will take care of her and it will teach me loads of responsibilities, pllleeeeaaaassseeee?”

I know what you are thinking if you are one of these parents; Why would I get Continue reading »

How did she end up in a shelter?

Brooklyn the Boxer

Brooklyn the BoxerI was sitting here at my computer yesterday, trying to come up with something that would be an interesting example of why the PETCO Foundation has a fundraiser just for pure breed rescue groups and the answer, quite literally, ended up in my lap.

I got an email from a local shelter, noting that they had just taken in a purebred 8 week old boxer puppy that had been tied to a pole outside of their offices that morning.  They asked if the rescue that I work with would be interested in taking the puppy so she wouldn’t have to spend any kennel time.   The kennels were full and our ability to take this pup meant that they didn’t have to make hard decisions to try to make room for her.  I took one look at the photo they emailed over and leaped at the opportunity (not that I wouldn’t have reacted equally quickly for any pure or mixed breed puppy photo they might have sent over).  However, of the many dogs I’ve fostered, I haven’t ever fostered a boxer or boxer mix, so figured it could be fun and different. I know a little about boxers, but when I get a new foster into my home, I always try to read up far more on the breed or breeds that might be in that dog so that I can try to understand them better start to determine what might be a good home based both on general genetics and the dog’s actual personality.

Now, as I type, the puppy is napping in my lap.  We’re calling her Brooklyn like the Brooklyn Boxer – a name that is tough but cute enough to be appealing to a potential adopter.  We have to think of those sorts of things, you know.  She is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, a Continue reading »

Blue Buffalo Limited Recall

PETCO was notified today, Oct. 8, that Blue Buffalo was voluntarily recalling a number of specific production runs of their Wilderness Chicken-Dog, Basics Salmon-Dog and Large Breed Adult Dog products, due to their potential to contain a higher level of Vitamin D than is called for in their product specifications.

Getting Your Furry Friend into the Howl-O-Ween Spirit

Halloween, or Howl-O-ween as we like to call it, is just around the corner. Check out these great tips from pet lifestyle expert Sandy Robins.

Do’sbumble bee dog costume

  • Purchase the outfit well in advance and allow your pet to try it out at home on several occasions.
  • Dress your pet right before an event. If participating in a costume parade or contest, dress your pet just before the line-up, as some costumes can be warm. “Take plenty of water along for your pet to lap up,” says Robins. Keeping your pet hydrated is very important. To find a Howl-O-Ween event in your area, use the petco.com store locator.
  • “The summer blockbuster movies are always a great source of inspiration for costumes,” says Robins. “No doubt that this year we will see a lot of Persian canine princes, Ironman doggies and Twilight vampires.” Other perennial favorites include ladybugs, jack-o-lanterns and devils. The bumblebee remains the most popular doggie costume of all time.
