Darcy of the Derby: Part Two

The Hamster Ball Derby is only a few days away - are you prepared? Check out petco.com/hamster to get training tips and exclusive savings. In the meantime, let’s check in on Darcy, to see how her training is going.

Day 8 of training
I mapped out a new route to pursue in my Run-About Ball.  My pet parent Wendy follows me around, cheering my speed and endurance, while ensuring that I remain safe!  Through the living room, I dash 20 feet, making a tight right turn that leads into the kitchen.  I discovered a trivial slope in the floorboards which requires me to use enormous front leg strength, pushing my paws as hard as possible.  I apply just enough vigor to ham my ball up the slight curve and then race at super speeds through the kitchen, down the hall, into Wendy’s bedroom.  I am still learning how to depart the smooth roll of linoleum, prior to colliding with the abrasive carpet.  That shag is like walking through sand; sand and dust are only for taking baths in!  To reward me Wendy bought a Kaytee Forti-Diet Pro Health Munchables Shred-A-Box.  I rip the box apart with my teeth, and front legs.  I am sure I have built enough muscle to Continue reading »

Animal Care Sheets in Spanish Will Get More “Kaisers” Home

The following post comes from PETCO associate Marino Sanchez, who works in the Ethics and Compliance Department.

When I was 13, my family and I moved from Mexico City, where I was born and raised, to South Carolina. To say that I experienced culture shock would be an understatement.  In our new, small town, there were no “English as a Second Language” programs available to me, no bi-lingual services or information posted anywhere and not one classmate to call a friend.

But on my 14th birthday, my parents gave me a beautiful Siberian Husky we named Kaiser. My family believed that pets made excellent companions, since  race, religion or language doesn’t matter to them. And they were right.

Kaiser was exactly what I needed to cope with the culture shock and the loneliness of being a shy teenager living in a foreign environment. He would cuddle with me, run with me and have my back unconditionally. We played together all the time. When I was feeling sad or upset, I could vent to him about my frustrations with my family or with my schoolwork. He would tilt his head and listen to me, or lick my hand as if he truly understood what I was saying and how I was feeling. The never-failing loyalty he blessed me with helped me adjust and cope to my new life in South Carolina because I knew that no matter how my day went, I would be coming home to my best friend.

This past week, PETCO announced that it will exclusively provide 25 of its most popular animal care sheets in Spanish – an announcement that makes me extremely happy and proud. There are so Continue reading »

Pets who blog and tweet? Of course!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I get to do some pretty cool stuff working for PETCO. And this weekend was a perfect example. I had the privilege of attending BlogPaws – the first ever pet bloggers’ conference in Columbus, Ohio.

@CosmoHavanese, a dog who tweets!

Not only did I get to meet a bunch of pets who blog, tweet and socialize on Facebook (yes, you read that right), but I left with an overwhelming feeling of pride in our company, the online pet community and an excitement for the future of social media – both for PETCO and for the animals we all love.

Our Director of Social Media & Commerce, Natalie Malaszenko, was invited to Continue reading »

Darcy of the Derby

Hi!  My name is Darcy, but feel free to refer to me as “Darcy of the derby” — the Hamster Ball Derby that is!  I am beginning my training for PETCO’s upcoming annual Hamster Ball Derby.  A year old, and the sweet color of brown sugar, I am a Syrian hamster who was born to be a derby champion!

My pet parent Wendy just brought me home a 7” red run-about ball, (red is the color of winners after all) and a Hamtrac so that I can begin my Derby training.  I will be watching what I eat nutritionally; only the best food and treats for this hamster!  I will be sure to obtain plenty of sleep during the day, and then run mile after mile throughout the night. Wendy always makes sure I have an abundance of clean, fresh water.  After a month of training and health food, I am sure that Wendy will reward me with lots of love and attention and possibly even a paw-dicure!

Natural Neighborhood Festival

A Doggie Yoga Pose

Grass in a parking lot? Yup. I thought it was a little weird, but the dogs loved it. You could see it in their faces when they entered through the gate at the PETCO Natural Neighborhood Festival in Santa Monica, CA.

“Concrete, concrete, concrete, concrete, concrete, concr… whoa… GRASS!!! Woo Hoo! ”

Check out all the pictures below.

Featured at the event were information stations for dog nutrition, dog training, and grooming; an adoption booth and doggie activity/obstacle course from the Heigl Foundation; a doggie massage station; partner booths from PETCO natural food vendors Solid Gold, Wellness, Natural Balance, Blue Buffalo, and Halo; talks from Dr. Marty Becker and Tracy Hotchner, skateboarding antics from Tillman and Friends; and (my favorite part) doggie yoga with Amy Stevens.

Yes, doggie yoga is a real thing. And no, I didn’t believe it until I saw it for myself. You’ll have to believe me when I say Continue reading »

Happy Tails: Quite a Ride

The following story comes from PETCO’s online adoption partner, Petfinder.com.

It’s not every formerly stray pup who is memorialized on cute little princess-colored bikes, but stop in at any Toys”R”Us store and you can see Dezzie Mae Wheeler, who lives in Hackettstown, N.J.

Time was when such a possibility would have been at the farthest reach of probability.  The dog was at the Dothan, Ala., animal shelter. when an adoption group called Save A Pet pulled her from the crowded facility and gave her a second chance.  May, as she was called then, was transported to New Jersey and found a home with the Wheelers, thanks to her listing on Petfinder.com.

“My daughter’s biggest wish was to welcome a Chihuahua into our family,” Sarah Wheeler says,” but after doing a lot of research, we decided that a little Chihuahua would not be a good fit for our family with three small children.”
