PETCO Customer Helps Make a Difference in Haiti

Working for PETCO, I hear a lot of great stories about our passionate, pet-loving associates who go out of their way to help animals in need.  Today, I heard  a story about a compassionate PETCO customer who went out of his way for some very special people in need.

Joe Fitzgerald, a PETCO customer from Melbourne, Fla., recently used his passion for animals to help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Joe and his dog, Tejyl, have been to Haiti three times since the earthquake, in support of both search and rescue personnel and Project Medishare, where Joe worked as a grief counselor to volunteers and patients in their field tent hospital in Port au Prince.

Tejyl (pronounced Tay-zhal), or Tej, as most people call him, is a 7-year-old golden retriever whose name is Hindi for Continue reading »

Advantage on PETCO Shelves, as Usual; EPA Taking Steps to Ensure Safe Safe Consumer Use of Flea & Tick Products

The following post comes from PETCO’s VP of Corporate Communications, Kevin Whalen.

I see this week that a PETCO competitor is promoting the recent addition of Advantage and K9 Advantix flea & tick control products in their stores.  The news release contained some cleverly worded language suggesting that they carry these products while others don’t – and I want to take a moment to clear up any confusion.

Fact is that PETCO has carried these same great products in our flea & tick assortment for seven years.

So for our customers, nothing has changed; they can find Advantage, K9 Advantix and other terrific flea & tick treatments right where they’ve always found them – at PETCO.

While we’re on the subject of flea & tick, our top dog merchant and I listened in on a lengthy Webcast the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency held yesterday. The agency shared results of a yearlong evaluation of cases where dogs and cats reportedly experienced “adverse reactions” to spot-on flea & tick products periodically applied to Continue reading »

Pet Photo Tips

(a guest post by professional photographer, Jennifer Petit)

The PETCO Foundation “I’m Home!” Photo Contest is running right now through April 30.  If you don’t already have some amazing photos of your pets, there is still time to take some.  Here are a few tips to help you get started.

We had the general idea of Hudson and bubbles with a plain background but I had extensive pre-planning to make it all work. I researched bubble makers and found one that would make bubbles large enough and non-toxic. I scouted locations throughout town to find a place that would be relatively deserted , had a solid background, and would be safe for Hudson to be off leash. Once we were on location I fired up the bubble maker and watched Hudson's reactions for a bit. We had to help him out with the bubble game a bit but once he was into it I knew where I needed to be. The dots on his collar are not a coincidence. His owner asked which collar we should use for his shot and after seeing the dots I knew that it had to be that one. I am using some off-camera fill flash in this photo.

A common question asked of professional pet photographers is what camera to use.   Here are some things to consider.  You can get great photographs from the smallest point & shoot cameras these days, but there are some qualities that you might want to think about depending on the type of photos that you would like to take. I recommend using a digital camera to photograph your pet. The ability to view what you have just photographed is extremely useful with pets and really allows you to experiment. Megapixels should not be your top concern unless you are planning to print out huge prints. Almost any camera on the market these days (and countless used ones ) have enough sensor elements to print a high quality 8×10. Continue reading »

Spring It On: Baby Wildlife

Spring is slowly stretching its magic across the country.  The mild weather and rain breathe new life into the flora and fauna around us – well, maybe not so much on the east coast, but it certainly is spring-like in places on the west coast.  And while the first official day of spring isn’t until March 20th, your local wildlife may already be prepared to greet the season with babies… lots of babies!

During this season, our stores usually get a lot of calls and visits from concerned and well-intentioned citizens trying to Continue reading »

Marine Tank Mystery

A week after adding the live rock and the snails to my new marine aquarium, I found the remains of one of my beautiful banded trochus snails scattered on the rocks in my tank.  The shell was broken into pieces.

The remains of a snail. Did it die of natural causes, or was it a victim of murder?

I immediately blamed the creepy crab with his big claws.  I asked the experts here at the office, and they agreed to disagree.  I got all kinds of responses.  “Most crabs are scavengers.”  “Never trust a hitchhiker.”  “It depends what shape and color the tips of his claws are.”  “When in doubt, take it out.”

I saw him climb into one of his rock caves and I decided that was my chance to remove him.  I took the rock out of the tank and put it in a small bucket filled with water from the Continue reading »
