What Breed is Bailey?

Did you know there are DNA breed testing kits that help you figure out what breed — or combination of breeds — your dog is, with just a few quick swabs of their mouth?

As a company that supports adoption first and foremost, we know that the dogs you rescue are mostly mixed breeds — which only means [...]

She’s Too Old and Too Fat and She Bites!

I occasionally have the pleasure of arranging the animal models for photo shoots.  Nothing too glamorous, just a hamster for an ad paper here or a betta for a package label there.  Small stuff really, and truly not part of my job, but I rarely turn down an opportunity to help out.

I haven’t had any formal training in the model selection process.  To learn, I watched a fair amount of America’s Next Top Model.  Unfortunately Tyra Banks is no help when it comes to choosing a good looking Leopard Gecko.  What Tyra did teach me is that models have a “shelf life”.  They can’t be models forever.

Which brings me to Noodles.

Noodles, the Diva

Noodles is a guinea pig. I’m sure you’ve seen her. She is a short-haired, tortoiseshell and white colored guinea pig who Continue reading »

Are Clownfish Right for Me?

I’ve always wanted Clownfish. I wanted them way before Finding Nemo came out, although I have to admit, I wanted them more after Finding Nemo came out…

This whole marine aquarium adventure started because of a pair of Clownfish. They were in my friend’s tank, doing just fine, despite the fact that it was overrun with creepy bristle worms. He had just about had it with his tank and was  threatening to flush the fish and heave the tank into the nearest dumpster. I don’t think he’d really do that, but I didn’t want to take any chances. I didn’t have a tank (yet) so I talked to the first responsible person I saw, and Continue reading »

Stokes Select Tips: Feeding Birds Suet

Here is another post from our guest bloggers, Don and Lillian Stokes, in honor of Wild Bird Feeding Month. Read their first post here.

1. What is Suet?
Suet is a type of fat from beef that is rendered, i.e., heated then cooled and formed into squares, sold as suet “cakes. Other ingredients such as sunflowers, berries, fruits, seeds or nuts may be added to the suet cakes.

2. Suet is High Energy
Suet is considered a high energy food for birds because it consists of fat. A gram of fat contains 9 calories per gram compared to 4 calories per gram for carbohydrates or protein. Thus, birds get more calories when Continue reading »

Celebrating February: National Pet Dental Health Month

You don’t have to brush your teeth – just the ones you want to keep. ~ Author Unknown

We all brush our teeth daily, most of us multiple times a day – it’s one of the few daily routines we all have in common.  But how many of us pause to consider brushing our pet’s teeth?  How many of us even consider the health of our pet’s mouth beyond the food we feed them?

One of the most common diseases animals encounter is Periodontal disease, an infection of the gums. The key to prevention is simple, inexpensive and may just improve your human-animal bond: regularly brush your pet’s teeth.

I encourage pet parents Continue reading »

Are You Prepared? Pet Disaster Plans

It’s always good to be prepared for emergencies – and the recent weather extremes and devastating earthquake in Haiti are valuable reminders of that.   That’s why, regardless of the particular weather or geological risks in your area, having an emergency kit for your pet is always a good idea. Make sure to be [...]
