Why Nutrition Matters for Your Pet

A friend of mine recently adopted a lab from an elderly neighbor. Knowing I work for PETCO, she called to ask what her new dog “Mollie” needed. We met at PETCO to go shopping with Mollie. As we walked throught the store, I realized she had put more thought into toys and beds and never considered what food to feed Mollie.  She mistakenly thought most foods were about the same. I corrected her and said that feeding the right food could help Mollie live a longer, healthier life and potentially prevent common health issues. I asked a few basic questions like how old Mollie was and

if she had any problems. Apparently Mollie scratches her ears and chews her paws a lot. I ran my fingers through her coat- it looked dull and dry. I asked what Mollie had been eating, her neighbor had been giving Mollie a low quality store brand food from one of those big discount Marts. No wonder Mollie’s coat was so bad! She asked my advice on what to feed, so we looked at the label and ingredients of several natural brands we carry.  She picked a bag and a few cans too.

The whole experience made me realize that most people just don’t know that good nutrition really matters for a dog or cat’s health. When you feed your pet a food made with high quality proteins, carbs, fats, enriched with anti-oxidants and omega 3′s you’ll see a difference in your pet in a short time. That’s what motivated me to write this post. I want to spread the word about good nutrition for pets. If you want nutrition advice- come into any PETCO store and ask for one our trained Nutrition experts. If you are worried about your budget, don’t assume “better quality” means “more expensive”. Keep in mind that with a high quality food, you’ll actually feed less food per serving. Those el-cheapo foods at the Mart stores aren’t as nutrient rich, so you end up feeding more food and costing more or at least the same as a really good quality food. In fact, you can feed your dog one of the best natural foods for less than $1 per day. Isn’t your dog or cat worth it?

  • Rick: great article. I’m always being asked these questions by my neighbors and friends. This is good feedback. I signed up for the Nutrition Advocate Program on line so I can learn more, even though it was probably designed for store associates. Thanks Rick.

    Rick,

This is so true! We forgot to grab a bag of our Natural kibble one evening, so we had to make a pit stop at a 24-mart for Moose’s, our 3-year old Pit Bull, dinner. We figured one bag would be okay, its Lamb & Rice – so its still good – right? Wrong! About half way through the bag we noticed Moose was shedding a lot, dark hair covered our white couch! A closer look at Moose’s coat said it all! The beautiful, shiny fur he had sported with his Natural Balance was All Falling Out, leaving just the dull stuff! Needless to say – we won’t be doing that again! Its important we spread the word!!

    Thanks, Nina

  • I am just concerned about the main source of Omega 3 which is the liver of fish. as you can see, fishes can accumulate mercury and pcb. `’~
