Jack is cool. Jack is a big, handsome, well-behaved German Shepherd with a knack for attracting a lot of attention. There are people here at the office who never spoke to me in the 1 ½ years I worked here before adopting Jack. And there are people here who I know would never speak to me if I didn’t bring Jack with me to work on a daily basis. There are a good number of people who only know me as Jack’s Mom. And there are the folks that say hi to Jack as they walk past him in the hallway, and they don’t acknowledge me.
Jack is a natural
Jack is a natural when it comes to social politics. He knows how to play hard-to-get with some people, and turns into a big mush with others. People want him to like them in a way they will never want me, or any other human, to like them. Shoot, I bet Jack would be invited to happy hours on a regular basis if they went someplace that accepted pets. I would be an after-thought; the means by which Jack gets to the happy hour.
This is all cool by me. In fact, I take a certain pride in the attention my dog garners from passers-by. I am secure enough in my un-coolness to admit that my dog is cooler than me. I prefer it this way. It is all a sign that I work in a place where everyone aspires to be as cool as their pet – err – Jack. Besides, it makes me cool by association.
I know exactly how you feel. As much as I’d like to think I’m super cool…. I know Flex (my chiweenie) would definitely get voted prom king.
Jack’s Mom – You have written my exact thoughts regarding my girl! And what a fabulous job you have done to help Jack have a wonderful new life as part of the PETCO team!

I just moved to NYC,known as an unfriendly place,but..not if you have a dog by your sde.My beautiful Shiba Inu Sienna is a people magnet. Everyone stops to pet her and say hello.
I am getting her second hand hello’s but it is ok. If you ever want to meet people, just go to a dog park.But you are not allowed in unless a dog takes you inside. Woof! Woof!
I play second fiddle to my dogs at home also (The wife would never admit it though). I’m totally OK with that though. As long as my two boys (and my wife) are happy, then so am I. Great read.

And what a true testiment to you a a Mom to be so proud of his ability to catch the attention of others. He is so obviously cool. *Can you say “HI” to Jack for me please since I don’t get to see him at work?* LOL

sounds like I should start bringing Sammy in, if I could get her to walk in the building with no problem. Jack is a beauty, but I always liked talking to you before Jack came around too.
