Animal Books

I received the great email below from a PETCO associate about her favorite animal books. I still vividly remember my 5th grade teacher reading Where the Red Fern Grows out loud to the class over the period of a few weeks. She was crying so badly in the end that she had to pass the book off to a student. That student made it through one page before she had to hand it off. We went through four readers before we made it to the end. What a great book. What are your favorite animal books?

Letter from Kim, a PETCO Associate

I’ve been happily employed at PETCO since December 2008. I’ve learned so much about caring for animals and I’m so proud to represent PETCO because I believe this company is genuinely committed to the health and welfare of pets. Since one of my hobbies is reading, I’ve looked for books with animals as the theme in the hope that as I pursue my hobby, I can also educate myself. That said, I’d like to share with other pet enthusiasts these books that I’ve read and loved so maybe others can share in the knowledge and empathy I’ve gained:

wesley_the_owl Wesley the Owl by Stacey O’Brien
dewey_small_town_cat Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World by Vicki Myron
the_daily_coyote The Daily Coyote: A Story of Love, Survival, and Trust in the Wilds of Wyomingby Shreve Stockton
my_dog_skip My Dog Skip by Willie Morris
spit_mcgee My Cat Spit McGee by Willie Morris
angels_in_disguise Angels in Disguise by Lou Dean
hot_air_henry Hot-Air Henryby Mary Calhoun and Erick Ingraham
cross-country_cat Cross-Country Catby Mary Calhoun and Erick Ingraham (Both of Mary’s books are children’s books)

The last three I mention here are especially dear to me because Lou Dean is an old family friend and Mary Calhoun has been my sister’s mother-in-law for over 37 years. If anyone takes my advice and reads these books, I hope you enjoy them and take as much away from them as I did. I know from reading them I’ve become a more knowledgable PETCO associate.

Very Sincerely,

Kim

OMG I love/hate Where the Red Fern Grows! It’s a wonderful book, but it always makes me cry so hard:) If you’ve never read it, you’re missing out!

I can’t believe that no one has mentioned,”The Art of Racing in the Rain” one of the best I’ve read.

Here are some lovely animal children’s books that I love to share with my students:

    Stuart Little by EB White
A Dog Named Kitty by Bill Wallace – a invaluable book for any child afraid of dogs
Ferret in the Bedroom, Lizards in the Fridge by Bill Wallace
The Warriors series by Erin Hunter
Hoot by Carl Haisson – excellent book with an ecological/animal protection slant.

    For picture books:

The Llama Llama series by Anna Dewdney
Little Wombat series by Charles Fuge
Up!: My Name is Dug by Kiki Thorpe

I have tons more…but these will satisfy any young animal lover who also loves a good book.

If you haven’t read it or haven’t seen the movie, “Marley, & Me, The Love and Life of the Worlds Worst Dog” it is well worth. It’s a true story about a Golden Lab and his antics. Many people say that Labs are stupid. Not so, They are just flat out goofy. Just like Marley. I’m sure you know the ending of the book and movie, but you will laugh and cry through out the book. The author, John Groogan was awarded a “Quill Award”(just like an Oscar) for the book. So read first. Pay attention to when Marley eats Johns wifes Gold necklace, and how they had to find it.
