We launched our pledge to premium nutrition today. Hmmm. A Pledge. A pledge to me is like a promise. A really important promise, at that. When I first chatted with our Sr. VP of Marketing, Elisabeth Charles about it, it dawned on me that our pledge is not only important, but at the heart of who we are and what we do at PETCO because it is at the heart of who we are and what we do as good pet parents. The first line of the pledge couldn’t sum it up any better, “PETCO believes every pet deserves better nutrition”. Oh yes, they surely do.
Premium Nutrition. That sounds simple enough. Everyone knows that quality food can help with ailments like itching, give the “Ooh La La!” to a shiny coat, put an extra oomph in your pet’s step, or more importantly, the consequences of poor nutrition, right? If you work in the pet food industry or are one of those folks that rocks the trivial pursuit board you do. And you know who are you. But for everyone else? I don’t think so. And I’ll be the first to admit that I didn’t realize how much quality food matters until I started working at PETCO. As much as I love my dog and cat, I gave it little thought.
Our natural food guru, Rick Rockhill, said something that resonated with me. “As is the case with people, what you put into your body has an impact on your health and well-being. That’s why choosing a high quality premium or natural food really makes a difference over the life of your pet.” That just hit the nail on the head. I think about what I eat. I know when I am being bad by giving in to my friends Ben & Jerry and surely see the impact of my cookie dough infused bonding time with them on the scale the next day. So why have I not been thinking like this when I think about what I’m feeding my pets?
Many pet parents don’t understand the complexity of pet nutrition or where to begin (Guilty!). PETCO launched a food selector to help narrow down the choices based on ingredients, ailments, favorite brands and even breeds.

Between the selector and the knowledge from my fellow PETCO associates, all I have to say is thank goodness there are ways to get help and sift through the options to make my dog happy and help my 30lb cat trim down. Yes, 30 lbs. We’re working on it.
In the next couple of weeks, you’ll see several stories on the Petco Scoop, from PETCO associates and friends on lessons learned and changes in their pet’s health by improving the quality of their pet’s food. We hope you will share your stories as well to serve as good reminders that we and our pets are truly what we eat.

When you think about how a better quality food can dramatically improve the health and quality of life for your pet, it is a “no-brainer”. The idea of being able to have my two dogs and cat live longer and be healthier is something really important to me, so I switched all three of my pets to a high quality natural food. How do I know it’s an authentic high quality, natural food? Well the ingredients show it has natural chicken, real whole food ingredients I can recognize, its rich in omega 3′s and 6′s and packed with anti-oxidants. It is a lot like the foods I look for when I shop for myself. Sure, I am knowledgeable about pet foods, I’ve worked int he pet industry a long time. But anyone can learn more by reading the label, coming into PETCO and speaking with a Nutrition Expert, or reading more on petco.com. I hope pet parents everywhere really take a look at the quality of food they feed their pet and be sure it is the very best. In the long run, it really is a better value because your pet will have fewer health issues later in life.
