As I stand on the sidewalk, watching men and women dressed in Hazmat suits move hastily in and out of what looks like a well kept bungalow-style house, the unmistakable odor of garbage and animal feces permeates the air.
Garbage bag after garbage bag of waste is being carried to an awaiting dumpster. “You have to move to across the street, people!” the man in the white suit and helmet says. “It’s not safe to be breathing in this stuff.” The group of bystanders moves quickly to the other side of the street. “How could anyone live like that?” one says. Everyone nods in agreement. Three days earlier, on July 24 , the Dearborn Animal Control officers aided by the Dearborn Animal Shelter and following up on a tip, raided a home in Dearborn, Mich.  Chihuahua's were found throughout the home Inside, 104 Chihuahuas of all sizes, shapes and ages where running throughout the home. If you’re anything like me, you may have been aware that something called Rescue Transport Networks existed but that’s about it. I’ve always pictured some furtive Underground Railroad sort of set up where folks in black skull caps and dark coveralls steal into shelters late at night and whisk away at-risk dogs to sequester them in other parts of the country while they hatch a new plan for them.
Nico looked at me with those languid bicolored eyes that held no fear or malice or even a sense of having been wronged. The smile that was on his face as he left the shelter last week now shone through his eyes and his demeanor, even through the dirt and the scars and the open sores and many healing wounds.
