I recently read an article about encouraging responsible rabbit adoption in a publication from the Animal Rescue League of Boston. My first response was to laugh – don’t we have better things to discuss then adopting rabbits?? Why would you need to adopt one when about 50 of them appear in my yard every morning? And it seems like such a minority among the millions of dogs and cats that need homes… however my ignorance was quickly challenged.

An underrepresented group, rabbits often fly under the radar at shelters, trumped by adorable puppies or large quantities of kitties. However, PETCO is doing something about it! According to the article, a PETCO in Dedham, Mass., has partnered with the Animal Rescue League of Boston to introduce a large amount of people to rabbits through a satellite adoption program. The innovative project involves shelters and rescue groups from across the country that offer adoptable animals and educational programs for those interested in rabbits or other small animals.

And apparently, rabbits make great pets. They are a soft alternative to those who are allergic to dogs or cats and can become quite bonded to their owner. The article definitely gave me a fresh perspective on bunnies (that I previously thought only existed around Easter time) and hopefully will draw more attention to small animals in general. Just because they’re not “man’s best friend” doesn’t mean they deserve to be loved or appreciated any less – so here is my shout-out to bunnies and bunny lovers everywhere, you rock!

The unfortunate fact around where I live in SE Missouri is that so many people adopt or buy rabbits for the kids for Easter, then have no idea what to do when the “new” wears off. I have loved rabbits for years, though I do not currently have any. Most people when they buy the cute little things in the store don’t realize exactly how much work keeping a rabbit can be, with the watering, the summer and winter care, the alfalfa cubes, the occasional messy accidents (just like any other pet).

I am glad to see PETCO taking a positive stance on this and hope it spreads nationwide.

  • i love rabbits and if your kid really wants one then have them look after a friend’s for a weekend and see if they can handle the responsebility. if they can then surprise them with a friend of their own. if they can’t then help them or start off small with maybe a virtual pet. if they feed the virtual pet and keep it alive for a period of time you make, then try their skills with a real one again. see if they can handle a pet of their own. thank you petco for taking a stance in this and try to do it for a very long time.(:
