PETCO Chihuahua Races
It’s that time again… PETCO’s 5th Annual Chihuhahua Races are almost here! Last year was my first time at the races and I am so excited to be part of it again. This event is so much FUN — there’s really nothing like seeing hundreds of these little pint-sized speed racers duel it out on the track!
So come join us for some fast and furry fun at PETCO as we race across the country — from west to east — in search of the fastest Chihuahua in the country! You and your dog can compete for great prizes or just watch all the excitement. Regional 1st place winners will receive a trip to compete in the National Finals in New York City at the end of August where they will run to claim the title! View our reigning champions.
Soon you will be able to register online www.petco.com/races. Racing spots will also be available on race day.
On Facebook? RSVP to the race in your area if you will be racing or watching. You can connect with other Chihuahua lovers, post pictures of your pet, and we’ll alert everyone who has RSVPed as soon as registration opens.

As the reigning champions for Phoenix, Kahlua and I were looking forward to the 2009 races. Imagine our disappointment when we discovered through a Google search that Petco pulled Arizona from their list of race sites! (Why didn’t Petco contact current titleholders re:2009?)
What’s worse? Last year, we asked reps from corporate if they were planning on continuing to have Phoenix as a race site. Their answer? Absolutely, because PetSmart has its corporate office here. Heh.
This is a great event, but we’re not fans of the abridged version. Please bring back Phoenix in 2010!
bring the races to hawaii
Yay! I was so sad at first when I didn’t see anything on the races (last year they were in April). So, imagine my surprise when I saw the page for the races today.
But why do you have to make them in Naperville?!? Come on Petco! Next year, let’s try for the North Suburbs!! How about Vernon Hills? They have a HUGE parking lot!!!
We are very excited that the races are coming back this year! They are always so much fun! It’s almost 100 degrees in Dallas today, so I cannot imagine what it will be like in August. It was so great having it in April last year, for both the dogs and their owners. We’ll still go, but it’s a little less enjoyable for everyone in all that Texas heat!
Laurie,
I’ve been in Dallas in August and I know what you mean about the heat. We are aware of this and are making a few changes to the races to accomodate for the hot weather.
Here are some specifics:
- Earlier start time – first heat 9 a.m.
- More shaded areas around tracks
- Misters/coolers in shaded areas
- Additional turf runways to protect little paws/pads
- Tables with umbrellas for added comfort
- Kiddie pools for dogs to cool off
- Fold-a-bowls provided to all participants
You need them in GA and AL
How cool, Daniel! It is great that you guys are taking such great care in planning this awesome event for the humans and dogs alike!
Go PETCO!
[...] place in August. This year the Dallas race is on August 8 (oh, the heat!), but Daniel assured me on the PETCO blog that they are taking extra persuasions to make it a more enjoyable experience for both the humans [...]
How come these races are not yet in the southeast? Are they coming in the future & if so, when and where?
Charlotte, NC dog owner
Oh no! What happened to the Aurora, CO regional race? My little dude has been practicing since last year and now… no local regional race?? Poop.
Registration is finally open, but the page is taking too long to load!
I’ve been trying all morning and nothing!!
HwelloW! Godbless Everyone! – mikee
Want Chi racing near me in sountern NH. Have two little ones. What fun!!
i have a chihuahua mix and i would love to enter her in the race but she is still a puppy only 3 months old but she will be 4 months at the time of the race she is very well trained and will probally run perfect in the race can i enter her is it to early and does she need to be fixed at the time of the race
o and shes only 3 pounds so i need to know if thats to small
Zoey, we would love to have your dog at the races. There is no dog age requirement and as long as your dog is part Chihuahua, she is welcome to race.
Thank you i will see if i can make it
I never received an email confirmation for my chihuhua. That really sucks. Can she still race?
In addition to being the birthplace of all chili cookoffs Terlingua, Texas is also the birthplace of Chihuahua racing. Earlier this year we held our 6th annual race (video and story at http://westtexasweekly.com/6th-annual-chihuahua-races-terlingua-ghosttown/). More conclusive proof may be found in an out-of-town article about the first race in 2004 at http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=861&dat=20040321&id=mMEMAAAAIBAJ&sjid=lWADAAAAIBAJ&pg=4553,5309881
I am glad to see that more and more people are enjoying the fun of Chihuahua racing through your events, but I would like to see recognition of Terlingua’s pioneer role and especially of the first true Chihuahua racing champion, Chicharron.
What an awesome idea to race Chihuahuas! I’m bummed I didn’t know about this until the TV news coverage of the Chicago area event, but Zino (my alpha Chi) can’t wait until next year. Zino is SO FAST, it’s just unbelievable. He’s got very long legs, and looks like a Key Deer. If only I had known he was actually a RACING chihuahua, and that there was an organized venue to compete, he could have reached his full potential as the quickest 4 pound dog alive. Darn it!
Next Year!
Chi races in Seattle 2010?!? Are they coming? We need them here in Seattle, my chihuahua really needs to race!
When are they going to have the 2010 races? can you please give us the dates so that me and my family could get ready form them? Thanks
Does anyone know when the 2010 races for MASS will be???
I’m searching everywhere for this years Chihuahua Races 2010 in Dallas, but I’m not finding it? Are you having it?
I found on the petco site that they do not plan to hold the chi races any longer. This year 2010, they will hold some other type of event that all dogs can participate in, perhaps a dog walk? not just chi’s. So, no more races, it appears.
Are these listings for 2010 or 2009? Is there going to be a race for 2010, this year? Are they done having the chihuahua races?
If anyone finds the dates for the races, please notify.
I can’t believe no chi races. well, better shop at PetSmart then! this is ridiculous! these events are so fun and many people come out to watch and TV coverage in Dallas is huge! rethink this!
