Welcome to Dogtown

dogtown-petco-sweepstakesPETCO is sponsoring the Welcome to Dowtown sweepstakes where you can win a trip to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah and help change a dog’s life.

To be honest I had never heard of the show until I was told about this sweepstakes. I don’t have cable at home so I rely on recommendations on shows to watch online.

Thankfully the National Geographic channel posts clips of Dogtown on their website. I browsed through a bunch of the videos while researching this blog post and here are two of my favorites. What an awesome thing this group is doing.

Video: Several of the dogs rescued from Michael’s Vick’s dog fighting program ended up at Best Friends Sanctuary

Video: Rescued Chihuahua behavioral assessment. Watch out for the life size child doll at 1:34. Trying to scare the dog? Heck, it scared me! I’m going to have nightmares about that doll.

Want to go to Dogtown? Enter to win an all-expenses-paid, four-day, and three-night stay for you and a guest at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, located in Utah’s Beautiful red rock country. You’ll meet the stars of Dogtwon and help the staff change a dog’s life.

Have any of you blog readers seen the show before? What do you think?

If you have never seen the Michael Vick Dogtown series it is HIGHLY recommended and can be ordered on DVD.

Many of the Vick dogs have been adopted out. Gracie being the most recent that was adopted by a woman I believe VA.

Cherry, the bait dog–I love this boy, he has come a very long way from one that would lay on his belly and scoot along the kennel in fear to a wonderful, loving & playful dog. Cherry is undergoing tests however to determine if he has cancer or not :(

A few of these beautiful dogs are now used as therapy dogs & have also become wonderfully amazing pets for families.

It’s truly a must see and one that will make you angry in the beginning when they go over the history & their horrible conditions by Michael Vick, but end with tears of happiness because of the outcome.

I love the show! It is now my “Dream” job. In Utah, away from the noise, the pollution, etc., etc. I just finished watching the show where 1,000 dogs were rescued from a puppy mill and my heart just broke. I would hope that if more people were aware what these dog’s go through they would not even consider buying a animal from a mill or from a petstore that buys their dogs from a mill. The Michael Vick story just as sickening but at the same time eye opening. If not for Dog Town or Best Friends the public would have never been told the severity of the treatment these dogs endured.

We need more places like Dog Town USA. What a awesome commitment they make to care for and rehabilitate these animals.

I never miss Dogtown or The Dog Whisperer. Dogtown is my goal and dream to work there. My start toward this goal was to register for the 4 day trip. I am hoping to be the winner. I think it would be awesome to work beside all those dedicated people at Dogtown. I feel there is a lot I can learn from them, that would make me an even better advocate for dogs. I know I am a better person because of my dog-angels. I assisted in a retirement center whick had 2 older dog residents. They both had the beginning of arthritis. I told the activity director (who was in charge of the dogs) about this doggie chew that would help the dogs. With her permission, I bought the chews for the dogs and gave them to the dogs regularly. She told me that it was not right that I pay for the chews and that the administrators would not pay for them. I told her that I did not mind buying and feeding the chews to the dogs because I seen how it helped. After all, I would rather spend the money on the dogs than myself. I am just an average woman. I have all that I need in my wardrobe. She was so please that I she put me in charge of the dogs. I told her not to worry because I would come in to take care of the dogs on my days off, off the clock. It was an honor. When the home decided to get a younger dog, I offered to take these 2 goldens. Our fenced shaded backyard has two small steps out to the patio from the sliding glass door in the kitchen. We build a graduated carpet cover ramp over the steps. It worked beautifully over the last 2 years we lost both these wonderful angels. Jake was 18years old and patty was 17 years old. I was trully blessed by God to have these wonderful angels in my life. I would do it all over again. We now have 2 rescued dogs. Hershey Kisses is a black lab/pit bull mix (we have had for almost 4 years), and Buster is a beagle/dachshund (we have had for almost 3 years). They were dumped as puppies. I hope to add another dog by 2010. I know our new addition will be a rescued dog. I would like to also start fostering dogs by next year. I visit Dogtown website, Animal Rescue Site website, ASPCA, and local animal shelters. I always drop money in donation box at the Petsmart and Petco. Currently. I am getting lists from shelters on what they need so I can donate. Last Christmas I worked with the children at my grandchildren’s elementary school making blankets for the shelters so the rescued dogs could have a comfy place to lay in the kennels. I am writing this so all can know there is so much everyone could do to help these homeless angels.

I hope that someday I could do as much as the staff at Dogtown do. They are all earthly angels.

God Bless All Of You At DogTown!
