Tricolor Love

The following story comes from Roxy Gieroski, Dog Trainer and Companion Animal Specialist at Store 1809 in Elmira, N.Y.

Dixie after her new forever family intervened, she's all healed up.

Dixie after her forever family intervened; her skin is healed.

I met Dixie as an 8-week-old pup while visiting a person I know that breeds my beloved Collies. Looking down at a litter of six, there was no competition. She was the one.

I wasn’t there to get a puppy and knew that I’d be walking out without her that day. But instantly, I was drawn to that little tricolor puppy. I spent hours with her and cried when I had to leave.

Only once before had I had an immediate bond with a dog like that. Piper, my very own tricolor female, had died on her first birthday, Christmas Day, only a couple of years earlier. Continue reading »

Pet Food Forum 2009

Pet Food Forum SignThis past week I attended The Pet Food Forum in Chicago; a conference of pet industry experts such as nutritionists, chemists, manufacturers, marketers, brand managers, packaging companies and suppliers who provide raw ingredients to pet food companies. There were several interesting seminars and round table meetings focused on how to continually improve the quality of pet food.

One session I attended was about how consumers choose a pet food. For example, more and more people are reading package labels and asking about ingredients in the pet food. However, a recent consumer survey indicated that Continue reading »

Ace is back!

10 week old Ace and me

10 week old Ace and me

Everyone, meet Ace, a yellow lab/pit mix. He’s my foster pup through Pit Bull Rescue San Diego. Ace (and his brother King) came to us several months ago as tiny 10 week old pups. We had them for a month before they were moved into seperate foster homes. King was adopted in just a few weeks, but it is a different story for Ace.

I love where I work.

Sheldon

Sheldon says "Don't be sad Rob"

I work in an office building. Many of us do. They’re all the same. They’re seldom beautiful… more industrial. Hardly graceful… mostly practical. If you’re lucky you’ll have a gym and a café. I’m not lucky. Office buildings are all over the place… in big cities and in small towns, on busy streets and on dead end roads, near bakeries and near cemeteries. They’re rarely inspirational. The PETCO Zoo

I’ve worked at PETCO for over 6 years now and been a customer much longer than that. Now that I have a child, visiting PETCO has become much more than just a shopping trip. My daughter LOVES to visit our local PETCO store or, as I have heard others call it, the free zoo. Even though we have annual passes to the San Diego Zoo (which is fantastic), nothing beats a quick trip to see the turtle tank or adoptable cats.

Click through or scroll down to see more pictures of our most recent “zoo” trip.

I'll take that one

You’re Giving Your Pet Away?

Why?

Photo from Pamela at Store 559 in San Diego, Calif.

“I’m moving and I can’t bring my pet.”

“We’re having a baby and just don’t have time anymore.”

“My new apartment doesn’t allow big dogs.”

“My child has lost interest in the pet.”

“We’re in the military and can’t have our pet on base.”

These are just a quick example of reasons people give up their pets. This is very upsetting for me.  Why do people think it’s ok to just give away their pet? I could never imagine having to give away my pets, but if you look at Craigslist under the Pets section, you’ll find an incredible number of people who are doing this.

Do you not consider your pet part of the family? Would you abandon your child? This may seem extreme, but I think this is the way pets should be treated, as part of the family.

PETCO – Where the Ducks Go?

Eugene PETCO — where the ducks go.

If you take a look at the PETCO logo, right under the dog and the cat image (yes, they do have their own names, Red Ruff and Blue Mews) – there is a little tagline that reads: “where the pets go.”

Go to any PETCO store [...]

Buddy 805

The following article is reposted from PETCO’s internal newsletter.
Buddy with Dad

Buddy with Dad

Christina, a member of the Copy Center team at the PETCO corporate office, noticed a little dog trying to cross the I-805 Freeway’s off-ramp. This particular part of the freeway is extremely busy – especially during lunch hour each day.

Being the animal lover she is, Christina pulled to the side to try and help the tiny runaway. Luckily, the little dog came right to her, and she drove off with him to the office.

“I called Susan from the PETCO Foundation right away because I knew she could help out,” said Christina. “Susan ran down here in two minutes flat!”

Susan has been known to move fast when there is an animal in need, and this was no different. She scooped up the little Pomeranian and took him to the Foundation offices. She contacted San Diego Animal Services and a number of other local rescue shelters to report the found dog and asked if there were any inquiries about him. Continue reading »
