By Paul Jolly, Executive Director the PETCO Foundation
“Love knows no season, has no bounds; in its presence miracles are found.”
Harold sitting under a table at home. Life is different for him since Josh passed away.
Josh was the first person who greeted us when we moved into our new house. This young high school freshman just loved animals and he had heard through the grapevine that we had a lot of animals. He became our “go-to” pet sitter that first week.
Josh was a dedicated pet rescuer and would often join me at PETCO adoption events. One Saturday, he completely fell in love with a big black and white cat named Harold. He brought him home that day and declared to his parents that keeping that cat was his “power-play” of the year. (Once a year, his parents gave him and his brother permission to override a parental veto, and I later learned from his mother that over the years the brothers had learned to choose wisely. Only the most important things to them made the grade.) Continue reading »
“Manager to the front, please,” – the announcement came over the loud speaker and there was Victor, standing next to his job coach, so brave and so proud of the completed employment application he held to his chest. As soon as I was within three feet, he rushed out to shake my hand, at the same time offering his application. The first words he said to me were, “I am going to work here.”
The three of us sat down and talked about what Victor could bring to PETCO and how exactly the job coach situation would work. Victor was part of a local education center for adults with special needs and this was his first attempt at applying for a job. I could not resist his 1000-watt smile and that eager determination; we agreed that Victor would, in fact, join our team at the Morena Boulevard PETCO in San Diego.
In the beginning, Victor had his job coach with him all the time. Victor was a quick study though and soon he needed less coaching, until he only needed his coach half of the time. Our entire staff celebrated when “our” Victor came to work alone one day, proudly announcing that he no longer needed the job coach provided by the center and was considered “gainfully employed.” Those two words, “gainfully employed” were the attainment of a special goal that Victor had set for himself, and those of us who knew him, understood their very special significance. I love looking at my 20-gallon freshwater community tank that I keep at my desk but my fish are such little guys. Sometimes you just want to see some big fish (or aquatic mammals to me more accurate). PETCO.com actually sells live fish but I did a search and whales and dolphins aren’t an option. Fortunately I have a Sea World San Diego annual pass so I am able to go there on a regular basis.
 Jumping Pilot Whale
Sea World is great if you are into photography because you can get up close and personal with tons of animals, like the Pilot Whale in the above picture. Sea world has the only trained pilot whales in the world.

I recently checked out the San Diego Doggie Street Festival, a really cool new annual event in town, and was in doggie-lover heaven the entire time. There were tons of rescue groups on site with all kinds of dogs for adoption, from puppies to older dogs and specific breeds to totally mixed up mutts. I even caught a performance by the very talented frisbee-chasing Disc Dogs in Southern California.
Not surprisingly, I fell completely in love a few times during the day. My absolute favorite was an adorable German Shepherd puppy that had just been rescued from the streets of Mexico. Look at this guy – can you blame me???

I was happy to learn that his adoption by a loving family was already pending.

 Jim with Tore and Sparky
As PETCO’s CEO, I’m delighted to welcome you to our new blog, The PETCO Scoop.
As you might guess, I love animals – especially my dogs Tore and Sparky – and I know how passionate our customers and associates are about the pets in their lives, too. That’s a big reason why we created this blog. We want it to be a forum for all of us to share great stories of how companion animals improve our lives, and how we can do the same for them. We’ve also recently launched pages on Facebook and Twitter, so visit us there, too.
For my first post, I wanted to share a few things about our company. Continue reading »
