You never really realize just how much they help you until that one moment comes I never realized just how much of an influence your animals could have on your life until I worked for PETCO.
One story made me realize more than any other. On Sunday, December 30, I was ringing out a customer at the register and began to make polite conversation. She was a very polite woman — the kind of customer that makes your day. I asked her how her holiday went, and she responded, “After the incident, everything was ok.” I asked her about the incident. She told me her dog saved her daughter’s life on Christmas Eve. I asked how and she began to tell me about their dog. She said he was a sweet dog and couldn’t even hurt a fly. He never even growled at anything his whole life. She then said on Christmas Eve her 16-year-old daughter was home alone for a little while.
In that time, someone broke into their home and threw her daughter to the floor and put a gun to her head. Then their 6-year-old rottweiler came and sat down on the floor next to the girl. The woman said her daughter’s first reaction was to yell out “sick him” repeatedly to her dog. Apparently, though the dog never responded, that was enough. The man ran out of the home fearing for his life and her daughter called the cops.
It immediately reminded me that your pets don’t have to do a single thing, just be there, and that’s more than enough.
